Fifty kilobytes is the most frequently specified limit on application forms, and it is a far more comfortable target than 20KB. For a typical portrait photograph there is usually enough room to stay at full resolution and lose very little visible quality.
Signature and thumb-impression images behave differently from photographs. They are mostly flat white with a small amount of dark detail, and they compress extremely well — often landing far under 50KB. If a form asks for a signature between, say, 10KB and 50KB, check the lower bound too, because a file can be rejected for being too small.
Screenshots are the awkward case. Sharp text edges and large flat areas are exactly what JPEG handles worst, so a screenshot forced to 50KB will show halos around the text. Where the form allows it, PNG is the better choice for that kind of image.

Will 50KB keep my photo at its original dimensions?
Usually, yes. Quality is adjusted first and dimensions are only reduced if no quality setting gets under the limit, which is uncommon at 50KB unless the source is a very large modern phone photo.
My signature file is under the form's minimum size. What now?
Signatures compress very efficiently because they are mostly plain white. Raise the target, or scan at a higher resolution so there is more genuine detail in the file to begin with.
Can I compress several photos to 50KB at once?
